Royal Air Force Computers Have Been Infected By A Virus Which Sends E-Mails To Russia
Royal Air Force (RAF) computers have been infected by a Virus which sends e-mails to Russia
Another event is reported that is in line with other public server and military server virus attacks seen up till now in 2009.
Are we witnessing to a wave of cyber war fare that is taking place in the virtual space?
A major breach in computer security has been discovered in RAF and claims are put forward that all e-mail traffic from several RAF stations has been sent to a Russian internet server.
The cause of this diversion of e-mails to the Russian servers is caused by a worm virus that entered the Royal Air Force systems on January 6th 2009 and brought down computers and blocked e-mail communications across the military.
There are questions whether the Ministry of Defense is failing to take cyber security serious enough.
There was no direct evidence of active Russian involvement but it is confirmed that e-mail traffic from some RAF stations was sent to a Russian internet server.
There are indications that the virus originated from the former eastern bloc and security experts were surprised at its sophistication.
The virus affected at least 24 RAF bases and caused damage to the computer systems of 75% of Royal Navy ships, including the aircraft carrier Ark Royal.
The RAF stations affected included those from which fighter aircraft have been scrambled to counter Russian bombers testing British air defenses.
This is just one case of virus attacks so far in 2009 that have brought down military or larger official server systems. French military reported also that their air craft navigation systems have been infected and incapacitated their fleet of air crafts for a period of time.
In addition several public servers in various communities all over Europe have been infected with various viruses, and caused systems to crash or behave out of the normal.
