Flying from Brisbane, Australia to Egypt...?
Flying from Brisbane, Australia. Wanting to holiday in Egypt, if possible do the museum tours and see the pyramids, sphynx and all the other 'Ancient Egyptian cultural attractions'. What are some activities reccomended whilst in Egypt, what parts should i visit and roughly what would all of this cost?
Went to Egypt for a holiday just over a year ago. Cairo is an extremely challenging city - dirty, polluted, overcrowded, madness on the roads and getting hassled a lot. The Cairo Museum is amazing however - allow 1-2 days to see that. We had an Egyptologist travel with our small group and we found him to be invaluable. The pyramids of Giza and the Sphynx are on the outskirts of Cairo and they are a must see. We caught an overnight train to Luxor and did a 7 night cruise down to Aswan and back which I can highly recommend. There is a fair bit to see around Luxor - lots of temples and tombs and trips on feluccas. We did a hot-air balloon trip over the Valley Of The Kings at dawn which was absolutely fantastic. We took a flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel (the only way to get there) which is an absolute must. I would strongly advise you not to go in their Summer. I went Oct-Nov and thought it to be a good time (20-30 degrees during the day, cool at night). Staying near the Cairo Museum is a good idea otherwise you will spend hours in traffic jams trying to get there. Abu Simbel and ballooning cost around $200 each but are well worth it. Lots of other stuff is negotiable if you organize it there (eg. people walked up to our cruise the day before and negotiated to get on for about 30% of advertised price or you could negotiate with a taxi driver to be your guide. Be prepared to be amazed (and hassled)!
While you are in that part of the world, can I strongly suggest visiting Petra in Jordan (absolutely stunning!)
My other piece of advice regardless of where you intend travelling is to check out trip advisor (latest reviews on hotels, attractions etc and can ask advice from locals)
