The Wonders of the Great Giza Pyramids
Possibly the most famous tourist attraction in the world, and one of the world's oldest, The Giza pyramids are the only one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World that still exist. Travellers have been marvelling at their construction, and the unimaginable ingenuity behind them for thousands of years.
The pyramids are around 5000 years old, and until the 19th century remained the tallest structures in the world. Nobody knows how ancient people, who were supposedly less "sophisticated" than people today, pulled off such an amazing architectural feat. The tallest of three great pyramids is Khufu, which is 138.8 meters tall (455 ft). It actually used to be taller, as it was originally constructed to be 146.6 meters tall (480.97 ft), but due to erosion and the loss of its pyramidion, which was a stone cap of the pyramid that was covered in gold plating. The second largest of the pyramids is Khafre, with a height of 143.5 meters (470.5 ft). Khafre is often thought to be taller than Khufu because it rests on a 10 meter high bedrock that makes it rise slightly higher than its taller sibling.
Menkaure is the smallest of the three Giza pyramids, at 61 meters (204 feet). Its original height was 65.5 meters (218 ft). The Sphinx is also an amazing sight to marvel at, especially when viewed with the pyramids situated diagonally behind it. The Sphinx is a half lion, half human figure that symbolizes royalty and power. It is another example of genius construction, being carved entirely out of a single piece of bedrock. It is the oldest of all the Egyptian colossal structures.
One of the reasons for the erosion of the pyramids over the centuries was that the structures would regularly be robbed of their stones in order to build the buildings in Cairo. This continued until the 19th century, and some of those buildings in Cairo are still standing today. It's hard to imagine what the pyramids looked like in pristine condition, but judging by how amazing they are even as relics, they must have been extremely impressive.
