History Of The Nargila
The nargila pipe, also known as a hookah or shisha pipe (alternative spellings include hooka, narghile, and sheesha), has a rich history of use that spreads around the world. Nargila and shisha are the terms used in the Middle East and Arabic countries, with 'nargile' being the common word for the pipe in Turkey. 'Hookah' is the word used in the country of origin: India. Since its creation, the pipe has become a pastime for recreation and socializing around the world, spreading to the United States in the twentieth century.
The hookah was invented in India some time in the 16th century. Tobacco was brought to India by Europeans and quickly became popular among the rich and landed classes. The hookah was invented as a tool to try to lessen the negative health effects of smoking tobacco. In theory, the hookah works like this: Smoke is passed through water at the base of the pipe, which removes impurities – for instance dissolving some of the nicotine from the smoke – resulting in a cleaner smoke.
The nargila is a central part of many cultures in the Middle East, as well as still being hugely popular in India. It is thought that the original pipes from India were fairly simple devices made of coconut shell, and it was in Turkey and the Middle East that the pipe was crafted into something closer to what we recognize today. In most countries throughout the Middle East there are hookah cafes, similar to a coffe shop in the Western world. Friends gather together to smoke and chat. These cafes had begun to pop up in other European countries and the United States in recent decades, however their growth has been stunted by new bans on smoking in public throughout many European countries and the US.
Hookah lounges and cafes are particularly popular in Western countries with college students looking to embrace some exotic culture. Smoking in this way first started to catch on in the States in the 1960s, largely due to the hippie generation and the anti-Vietnam war movement. Many people emphasize the social aspect of smoking the nargila. The experience is more about enjoying time with friends and less based on an addictive need to smoke, as with cigarettes. However, while hookah tobacco generally contains less nicotine than cigarettes, because of the volume of smoke that is often consumed in a hookah smoking session it is still possible to develop a nicotine dependence if you don't smoke in moderation.
