Bargain Holidays In Egypt
Egypt has never been a more affordable travel destination for the European traveller. The value of the Egyptian pound has decreased significantly in value compared to all of the major global currencies. The official nationally currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound (E£), or the Guinay as it is called locally. Each Egyptian pound is worth 100 piastres (pt). For a comparison of value, a pound in the United Kingdom (GBP) is worth more than eight times that of the Egyptian pound. This excellent exchange rate is only an added bonus to an already inexpensive country.
Egypt hotels are very reasonably priced. Cairo, for example, can be quite cheap if that is your aim, yet offers many of the luxuries of the UK. It is relatively easy to find a lovely hotel for under £50 per night, or you can spend a little more and be in the lap of luxury. Alternatively if you are on strict budget there are many respectable hotels for under £30 a night!
Food is also far from expensive. You can fill your refrigerator with fresh vegetables for less than £7, or enjoy some local falafel for 30 pence and even get an upscale Italian dinner for £20, including a liberal amount of South African wine.
In addition, transport is cheap with taxies to anywhere in the city for a couple of GBPs and a metro ride for barely 15 pence. Furthermore, the half-day train ride from Cairo to Luxor can be as little as £4 in second class. Even flying is a great deal—a domestic flight on Egypt air can be under £25.
In general, Egyptians are very hospitably to strangers by nature. Do not be surprised if the majority of the people you encounter greet you with a ‘salaam' or ‘ahlan wa sahlan' (hello/welcome). You may even be invited to have shai (tea) with some of the locals. Much of this friendliness, especially in more rural areas, is genuine; the food and drink offered are not efforts to pry open your wallet.
When considering beautiful, interesting, and affordable places to travel in the world, think about choosing Egypt as your destination, you will not be disappointed!
